Should You Get A Parrot

“Should I get a parrot?” this is a question that bird people get asked all the time.

Are you the kind of person who:

  • Takes lots of vacations?
  • Would rather go out on a Friday night with friends than stay home?
  • Someone who wants a low-maintenance animal?
  • Someone who works lots?
  • Someone who hates reading/learning?
  • Does not want to constantly buy new toys/perches and rearrange cages?
  • Hates cleaning?
  • Wants your house to be quiet and calm all the time?
  • Wants a short life-spanned animal?
  • Sensitive to dust?
  • Loves candles/does your house smells like candles?
  • Don’t want to get bit by an animal?
  • Will not listen to what an animal is communicating to you?
  • Don’t have a lot of extra time?
  • Do not want an animal flying around your house?
  • Wants an animal they can force to do whatever you want?

If any of these are you. You are better off not having a bird. don’t feel bad that is perfectly fine not everyone is meant to have a bird! Birds require specialized care and not everyone lives a life conducive to a bird.

If you are someone who:

  • Is a homebody
  • Loves to clean
  • Loves to prepare meals
  • Has at least 3 hours to let a bird out of their cage
  • Enjoys watching birds fly around their home
  • Enjoys reading/learning
  • Are willing to learn bird body language
  • Read and listen to bird body language
  • Okay with being a bit if you make a wrong judgement call
  • Want a lifelong companion
  • Enjoy the sounds of happy birds
  • Doesn’t mind shopping for bird supplies
  • Is willing to drop anything and rush your bird to the vet if need be

Then a bird would be a perfect companion for you!

No one will know how you answered these questions, only you. It’s important, to be honest with yourself, your habits and your lifestyle. This is a big commitment and for the sake of the bird, you need to make sure you are ready and know what you are getting yourself into. Lucky for you that’s why optimalavian.com exists!!!
