HELP! – My Parrot Has White Spikes On Its Head?

This is completely normal, so do not fret. These white spikes are new feathers coming in, they are often referred to as pin feathers.

What are they?

Pin feathers are new feathers coming in. you may notice your bird sheds (molts) old feathers this is normal but birds must get new feathers in if they are losing old feathers otherwise you will have a bald bird. Pin feathers are a new feather in keratin sheathing.

What do they look like?

Honestly, they look like little white spikes all over the bird’s head usually (as they can’t reach their head).

Here you can see a pin feather in the blue box

What do I do?

With little birds especially you want to be super gentle some birds may not even want you to touch them. Do not pull them out, do not pull on the sheathing, do not twist them. Allow your bird to rub up against your fingers if it wishes. If I do anything I might just give them delicate head pets this can sometimes get ready sheathing off.

For the most part increase the humidity in your bird area, give the bird more showers too this will help relieve some of the aggravation.

Do they hurt?

They can be extremely sensitive when you are touching them. Some birds will want you to help them others will not want you anywhere near them. Listen to your bird and what they want.
