DIY Parrot First Aid Kit!

Parrots get sick injured super easily yes there are plenty of emergency after hours clinics but what if that hospital’s bird people are off duty and you have to wait till morning or God forbid Monday! Having a first aid kit that you know how to use can save your birds life! Key being you know how to use!

This is a basic list of things I think EVERY parrot owner should have regardless of your skill level.

FIRST AID DOES NOT REPLACE VET CARE IT IS TO CARE FOR YOUR BIRD UNTIL YOU GET THEM TO A VET!!!

  • Corn starch – clots blood, safer than quick stop if a bird preens the area and ingests the corn starch
  • Silver shield/colloidal silver – good for improving wound healing
  • Activated charcoal – for ingested toxins
  • Tweezers – blood feathers (ONLY IF YOU HAVE BEEN TAUGHT HOW TO – Blood Feathers – What to do!!! is a very complex topic and situation)
  • Saline solution – flushing eyes and wounds
  • Syringes – a variety of sizes (incase you need to handfeed – last resort)
  • Cayenne pepper – is a natural pain reliever
  • Pure chamomile tea – calming
  • Calendula flower – wound care
  • gloves
  • cotton swaps
  • iodine or betadine
  • vet cage / travel cage where you can reduce the amount of energy they are expending by perching and flying around and eliminating the risk of injuring themselves further by falling from a perch if they become weak
  • hot water bottle/heating pad
  • clean towels
  • Magnifying glass – to get better look at injuries
  • flashlight – to get better look at injuries
  • vets phone number – in the case of an emergency the last thing you want to do is be scrolling through your phone trying to find your vets phone number
