8 Reasons your budgie/parakeet/parrot is biting you

Parrots do not bite for no reason. Rescue parrots who have never had a person listen to them and always had to resort to biting will be more likely to bite than a bird who has had people listen to their body language. Clipped parrots also are more likely to bite you because they cannot fly away from you.

Reasons

  1. Clipped wings
  2. You are not reading respecting their body language
  3. Hormone season
  4. Protective over their cage/food/toys/friend
  5. they may also “bite” as they explore new surroundings, sometimes birds will more so nibble on your hands, arms, shoulder etc because they are exploring and becoming familiar with their surroundings
  6. Injury – you could be touching somewhere that they have an injury that hurts!
  7. Illness – they could be sick
  8. Fear – you could be asking them to do something they are afraid of. If youve taken your parrot to the vet you will notice they “towel” them this is not only for the parrots protection but the vets protection against being bit since fear can cause a parrot to bite, and parrots don’t go to the vet often.

Solutions

  • Do not react! I know! its hard! but it is better if you don’t react and just leave the room. – if you react their is a chance your parrot could take it as you are “playing”. They also learn that once they bite you the fun stops.
  • Determine the cause of the bite
  • if your birds wings are clipped for non medical reasons, allow them to grow out and become flighted then your parrot can remove themselves from situations that make them uncomfortable resulting in less bite caused by fear or uncomfortable situations
  • Remove any toys that your parrot is resource guarding and work on that if your parrot is resource guarding their friends/cage/food
  • consult your vet about any potential injuries or illness ‘
  • read your parrots body language and what they are telling you and RESPECT IT.
